National College of Arts – NCA
The National College of Arts (NCA) is a degree-bestowing art university in Lahore, Punjab. Created as the Mayo School of Industrial Arts in 1875, it is the first art college in Pakistan. It became a degree-awarding institution in 1985 and a university in June 2011. The main campus of the school is situated between the Lahore Museum and the town hall. A smaller secondary campus with a more limited class offering is located in Rawalpindi.
One of two art colleges created by the British Crown in British India in reaction to the Arts & Crafts Movement, the Mayo School of Industrial Arts was named in honor of the recently assassinated British Viceroy of India Lord Mayo in 1875. Its first principal was Lockwood Kipling, who was also appointed the first curator of the Lahore Museum, which opened the same year in an adjacent building. The school was renamed the National College of Arts in 1958. Designated the premier art institution in the country, it was transferred to the Education Department from the Department of Industries in the 1960. It received degree-awarding status in 1985 and created its first graduate programs in 1999. In 2006, the school opened a second campus, at Rawalpindi. It became a university in June 2011.
University College of Arts & Design – UCAD
The College of Art & Design was started as the Department of Fine Arts in 1940. Anna Molka Ahmad was its pioneer, mentor and the guiding spirit for three decades. BA classes were started in June 1942, MA Fine Arts in 1955 and BFA and MFA Graphic Design and Painting were initiated in 1964.
In 1998, the Department of Fine Arts was given the status of an Institute, offering MFA in Graphic Design, Book Illustration, Print-Making (Graphic Arts) and Painting, along with an MA in Painting. In 2003 a Doctoral programme was started and in March 2004 the Institute of Art & Design was raised to the level of a College.
This was made possible by the leadership and vision of Lt. General (Retd.) Arshad Mahmood, the former Vice-Chancellor of the University and Lt. General (Retd.) Khalid Maqbool, the former Chancellor of the Punjab University.The College plans to have six independent departments, each offering three degree programmes.
Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design – PIFD
The Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design, commonly referred to as PIFD, (formerly known as Pakistan School of Fashion Design) is a public sector degree awarding institute in design institute specializing in design education. It offers a four-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree. PIFD established in 1995, it was a pioneering venture to impart globally competitive education in fashion design. In due course of evolution, it was reconstituted as Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) and was granted Charter by the Government of Pakistan through PIFD Act 2011.
With the growth of Pakistani textiles, there was a shortage of trained professionals to develop the industry. In 1994 the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (formerly EPB) with guidance from the government of Pakistan came together with Mr. Olivier Lapidus to establish the Pakistan School of Fashion Design in a rented premises at Sunder Das Road, Lahore. The Pakistan School of Fashion and Design was named “Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design”, and incorporated under Section 42 of Companies Ordinance 1984, in 2008 under the sponsorship of Ministry of Commerce, government of Pakistan. The NOC was issued from Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) for degree awarding status in 2007.
The institute has been granted the Charter for degree awarding status by the National Assembly in November 2010. This is a significant milestone in the endeavour to acquire Charter status which will enable the Institute to provide an HEC recognised degree.
Beaconhouse National University – BNU
Beaconhouse National University (BNU) is a private liberal arts university located in Lahore. It is Established in 2003 by Beaconhouse School System, it is located at the Raiwind, a subdivision of Lahore District. The BNU campus is adjacent to the Bahria Town. BNU offers study programmes in visual design and arts, architecture, liberal arts, computer information technology and mass communication. It is a member of the Higher Education Commission and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
Being Pakistan’s first true liberal arts university, BNU’s objective is to provide and integrate the highest quality of liberal and professional education; delivered by nurturing a stimulating intellectual community whose foundation was built upon interactive dialogue and inquiry among faculty and students.
Lahore School of Fashion Design – LSFD
Lahore School of Fashion Design started its humble beginning in a borrowed campus in 1995, as a Scheme of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Ministry of Commerce, and Government of Pakistan. The Lahore School of Fashion Design is watched as a permanent learning community in which present and upcoming leaders can recall what is significant in their lives.
Lahore School of Fashion Design is creativity by a group of concerned that has played a very important part in the development of man and his environment. It has been one of the most actual and inoffensive resources of message throughout the history of manhood by being a substance in making people aware of their circumstances and environments, inspiring them to become partners in the process of change.
The Lahore School of Fashion Design, referred to as LSFD, is the only private institute focused on Art and design education. The campus is situated in Usman Block Garden town, Khayaban e Jamia Punjab, Lahore. The institute is affiliated with the University of Sargodha and offers a 4-year degree program of Bachelors in Art and Design, and 1-2 year diploma courses in Fashion Designing, Textile, Interior Designing, Graphic Designing and Fine Arts. Short courses are also being offered such as photography, sculpture, painting, jewelry making etc.
