When we talk about Top universities of Pakistan, Punjab University comes on 1st number. According to the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Punjab University is one of the top ranked general universities in Pakistan. Established in October, 1882, it’s a public university. The President of this university is Mujahid Kamran. Many major institutions that were previously affiliated to Punjab University have now become independent universities on their own, such as Government College University and Medical and Engineering Colleges.

History
University of the Punjab Lahore was established in 1882 at Lahore, the university is the biggest and the oldest institute of higher education and continue to serving thousands of students every year delivery quality education to their students. The University of the Punjab came into existence as a result of a long drawn struggle of the people of Punjab after the Indian War of Independence in 1857. Prof Dr GW Leitner was the founder of the university. Contrary to the three previously established universities, which were only examining institutions, the University of the Punjab was both teaching as well as examining body right from beginning. It was the fourth university to be established by the British colonial authorities on the Indian subcontinent (the first three universities were established by the British rulers at their initial strongholds of Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras). This university was the first university in the Muslim majority area of sub-continent.
Campuses
The University of Punjab has two main campuses
- Allama Iqbal campus (Old Campus)
- Quaid e Azam Campus (New Campus)
Allama Iqbal campus is Located in the heart of Lahore, neighboring the buzzing Anarkali Bazar and the Mall Road. Quaid e Azam Campus is located on both sides of the famous Lahore Canal Bank. The new campus is spread over 1200 acres. The old campus has 3 departments, IT, Pharmacy and Arts. Apart from these, there is urdu department opposite to Pucit which is called Oriental College. In addition to the two large campuses in Lahore where most of the programs are offered, there are three smaller campuses in Gujranwala, Jhelum and Khanspur. The campus in Khanspur is specially attractive as its close to Ayubia, with excellent whether during hot summer months.
Ranking
Punjab University was ranked No.2 in the top large universities of Pakistan in the latest ranking by HEC for the year 2013. Compared to any other university of Pakistan, Punjab University has a huge infrastructure, resources, area and facilities. In international ranking of more than 20,000 universities of the world conducted by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, Punjab University has secured 15th position in South Asia, which is a landmark achievement while it has topped among all Pakistani universities.
Hostels
At present PU has 28 hostels, 17 for male and 11 for female students. Most of these students are accommodated in the hostels at the Quaid-e-Azam Campus. All hostels are separate for boys and girls. Even single rooms are also available both for boys and girls with allied mess and other facilities. There is separate hostel for Sports girls and boys, those hostel are along with grounds where they practice on daily basis. Each hostel is looked after by a Warden and a Superintendent, who are generally members of the academic faculty. Management of the hostels is coordinated by the Chairman Hall Council, who is a senior faculty member. Girls are allowed to leave the hostel without permission before evening, and need permission from the warden if they want to leave after evening timings.

Punjab University (Old Campus)
Allama Iqbal Campus is also known as the old campus which is located in the centre of Lahore. The Campus is surrounded by all the historical parts of Lahore, with City Hall just a 2 minutes’ walk away while Anarkali Market being right behind the college. The name of this campus is originated after the great South Asian thinker and spiritual poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal. It has 3 departments PUCIT, PUCAD and PU Pharmacy.
- PUCIT
Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT) is a college of computer science and information technology at the University of the Punjab located in Lahore, Pakistan. The college is located on the university’s Allama Iqbal Campus (Old Campus) in Bahawalpur house near old Anarkali and PUCIT New Campus is located on Sayed Qabeer Ali Shah road, Canal Road Lahore and near the Hanjarwal stop in Canal Road. The college was established with the name Center for Computer Science in 1988. In 1991 the Center for Computer Science was upgraded to the Department of Computer Science and for the first time a full-fledged two-year MSc program (annual system) in computer science was offered. The first ever intake for the program was 15 students, which eventually increased to 30. The College launched the 4-year (8-semester) BSc (Honors) in Computer Science program in November 2000. The classes of the new BSc (Hons) in Computer Science started in January 2001 with about 180 students. The program was offered on Self-Support basis only.
- PUCAD
The College of Art & Design was started as the Department of Fine Arts in 1940. Anna Molka Ahmed was its pioneer, mentor and the guiding spirit for three decades. At that time she was a young graduate from Royal College of Art, London, who had migrated to Pakistan with her husband Sheik Ahmad. With the untiring efforts of Mrs. Ahmad BA classes were started in June 1942, MA Fine Arts in 1955 and BFA and MFA Graphic Design and Painting were initiated in 1964. In 2003 a Doctoral programme was started and in March 2004 the Institute of Art & Design was raised to the level of a College. This was made possible by the leadership and vision of Lt. General (Retd.) Arshad Mahmood, the Vice-Chancellor of the University and Lt. General (Retd.) Khalid Maqbool, the Chancellor of the Punjab University. The College plans to have six independent departments, each offering three degree programmes.
- PU Pharmacy
The department of pharmacy was started in the sub-continent in 1944 at King Edward Medical College Lahore. When Pakistan came into being, this department was shifted to University of the Punjab in 1948. The department was upgraded to the level of Faculty by the University authorities in 1979. The Faculty underwent continuous progress in-terms of teaching and research facilities and students intake. The Faculty has a spacious library having more than 20000 subject books. Mission of the college is to improve the quality of pharmacy education in Pakistan through excellent and updated courses conducted within an educative and friendly researched based innovative environment.
Hailey College of banking and finance
Hailey College of Commerce was established on March 04, 1927. The College continued its academic activities in this premises and was shifted on 23rd September, 1978 to Quaid-i-Azam Campus (New Campus). After shifting the Hailey college in new campus; the old campus became unused so Arshad Mahmood, Vice-Chancellor of University of the Punjab, got the old premises renovated and rehabilitated Hailey College of Banking & Finance and established on 26th March 2003 as the fifth Constituent College of the University of the Punjab. They are offering these degrees.

University Law College
University Law College Punjab University is oldest law college in the city Lahore. The law classes were taken over by the Punjab University Law College in 1870. But that time there is no rule and regulation for the examinations and classes and in 1873 rules were framed by the senate of the Punjab University for admission in the college. In 1890, Government of India empowered the college to confer LL.B. and LL.D. degrees. In 1964, under the directions of the West Pakistan High Court, the LL.B professional course was extended to three years.
Now the college offers many diplomas as, taxation laws, labor laws, intellectual property laws, etc. The college also offers Ph.D in law. The main building of the College in earlier years were hosted at Katchery Road. In 1978, the college was shifted to the present premises at Quaid-e-Azam Campus. University Law College’s library has an extensive collection of law books and journals. The collection is updated on regular basis and appropriate recommendations from students are also appreciated.

Punjab university offers degree programs in almost all areas of studies including physics, chemistry, Biology, Material Sciences, fine arts and design, architecture, business management, Law, Pharmacy, psychology, islamic studies, humanities, social sciences, IT, engineering and media sciences. The Punjab University has a central library, which is called ‘Punjab University Library’. It was established in 1873 as ‘Punjab University College Library’. PU Transport
There are 58 Buses for students, teachers & staff on 41 routes within the city and a whole day quarter-hourly service between Allama Iqbal Campus and Quaid-i-Azam Campus. To meet the running cost of University buses a nominal amount is charged from different categories of students and employees.
